You know someone named Arsenio Billingham? No.

Yeah, okay

Cuttlefish is the chewing gum of the Orientals.  Is there a word for something that would be crazy racist from a white person, but is coming from a member of the demeaned group?  I’m not even sure who the target audience is for this, so I don’t think it’s the kind of minstrely selling out of demeaning your own group to get white people’s money.

“Tell my fantasy owners I’m sorry.”

Maurice Jones-Drew apologizes to his owners after pausing at the 10 yard line to run out the clock and ensure a Jags victory WITHOUT scoring a touchdown.

Scary things

A new study in the journal Child Development suggests that reassuring kids by telling them scary images aren’t real is helpful for those around 7 and up, but for the younger ones it may not be preferred. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, found that when preschoolers get scared, they prefer to think of the fantastical threat as "nice."

The Journal of Child Development made this realization after discovering a popular new children’s program called "Sesame Street."

And on the subject

I think it’s ridiculously awesome that Khalid Sheik Mohammed will be convicted by a jury of 12 New Yorkers for his role in September 11th.  I don’t really think there’s a more satisfying closure to something like this then a guilty verdict.  I imagine that it won’t go like this (nor would the foreperson really be able to muster up the strength to pull it off), but I’d like to see a trial, followed by a verdict read for each victim.  "For the murder of {xxx}, guilty."

That’s how we do it in the USA, and if you don’t like it, go see if King George will take you back.

Carrie Prejean’s Right to Privacy

I like what Pandagon has to say here about Carrie Prejean’s latest sex tape release.  It’s another case of a lousy person still being entitled to their rights.  She’s a homophobic moron, and I think the amount of harm she deserves for that is being known nationwide as a homophobic moron who may find people don’t want to associate her/award her with major beauty pageant awards because of her general idiocy.  See Khalid Sheik Muhammad for another example.  Anyway, the point is summarized thus:

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with learning something from the fact that this video exists.  That the video was released in an act of sexual assault, and should be treated as such.

I don’t really think I can argue with this.  It’s worth saying, at some point, that she’s a hypocrite and bring to bear at least the knowledge that she has violated her own self-righteous morality.  But I think releasing a video is a really, really different kind of a thing.  KSM wil likely get the death penalty; that doesn’t mean it’s okay to just shoot him in the back of the head without a trial.

Why do we even have Democrats?

So bizarrely anti-choice language popped on in the health care reform bill, and seems to be moving forward.  Better than I could explain it:

I suspect that the leadership decided that abortion was the least important thing they could throw to the slavering Blue Dogs to take home as a victory over the liberals in this debate. And they had to find a hippie to punch to make the thing acceptable to the villagers, so they decided to punch the desperate pregnant girl. She’s used to it.

You probably didn’t need to know this:

RT @alyankovic:  Colonoscopy today!  Jealous?

My childhood heroes are getting old and having colonoscopies.  And yes, Weird Al should be anyone’s childhood hero.

Maine Fail

And Maine becomes the 31st state to have its voters explicitly deny basic human rights to gays and lesbians.  Congratulations.  The victory for Yes on One was backed in no small part by the Mormon Church, which has decided pretty affirmatively that the best response to facing a century of bigotry is to lay it on so thick that mainstream America can’t be bigoted against it anymore.  I suppose if you really establish yourself as one of the Haters, you can’t be one of the Hated.

The campaign also spent most of its time hinting that allowing gay marriage would require public schools to teach that being gay is OK.   In other words, they’re playing on people’s fears that their children will turn into homosexuals.  Or perhaps, their children will be molested because gay teachers will know there’s nothing to stop them?  I’m amazed these kinds of lingering, hateful appeals still have any currency in the United States.  Losing this vote 51-49 is unacceptable.  But winning it 51-49 is really unacceptable as well.  Winning it 75-25 is unacceptable.  America:  Grow the fuck up.
